The rhythmic rush of water. It’s the sound that defines Graue Mill. Right here before you stands a testament to history. A water-powered gristmill built in 1852. It’s more than just a building. It’s a living story.

Frederick Graue a German immigrant built Graue Mill. He brought his skills in waterwheel gristmilling. He settled in Fullersburg. This was a farming village near a transportation hub. He and William Asche initially built a sawmill together. After three years Graue pursued his own milling business.

He and his family dug ditches. They used the clay to make bricks. They built a kiln. They painstakingly constructed Graue Mill. The mill started operating in the summer of 1852. Four buhrstones from France were key to its operation. These millstones ground locally grown corn and wheat. The Graue family were Pietists. They opposed slavery. This mill is one of three confirmed stops on the Underground Railroad. They helped fugitive slaves escape to Canada.

Graue Mill operated for around sixty years. The Graue family ran it for three generations. Steel rolling mills changed the industry. Graue Mill closed in the 1910s. The Civilian Conservation Corps restored it from 1934 to 1943. It reopened in 1951 as a working historic site.

Today Graue Mill remains a remarkable landmark. It’s the only operating waterwheel gristmill in northern Illinois. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It’s also a Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark. The mill has undergone many restorations. Recent work included dam removal and ecological restoration. The waterwheel is now motorized. A pump system ensures water flows through the mill’s sluiceway. Graue Mill stands as a symbol of resilience. It’s a reminder of a bygone era. It connects us to the past. It whispers tales of German-American ingenuity and courageous acts against slavery. Step inside. Let its history envelop you.
