Picture this. You stand before the Ancienne consigne sanitaire. Its stone facade speaks of centuries past. This unassuming building holds a pivotal place in Marseille’s history. It’s more than just old stones. It’s a silent witness to tragedy and resilience.

The Ancienne consigne sanitaire served as Marseille’s health authority. Built in 1719 by military engineer Antoine Mazin it oversaw the prevention of epidemics. It ensured the quarantine of ships arriving at the Old Port. This imposing structure stood guard against disease. Its purpose was to protect the city from outbreaks. The building was expanded in 1804 and 1827. A second identical pavilion was added in 1862. Constructed of Couronne stone this first building is a registered historical monument.

The year is 1720. The Great Plague sweeps through Marseille. The Grand-Saint-Antoine a ship from the Levant arrives. Its cargo infected with the plague bacillus. Despite strict quarantine measures the plague spreads rapidly. The poorest and oldest neighborhoods suffered the most. The death toll is staggering. Between 30 000 and 40 000 people perished in Marseille. The plague also ravaged Provence claiming an additional 90 000 to 120 000 lives.

The responsibility for the outbreak was investigated. The ship’s captain and a city official were questioned. No formal proof of negligence was ever found. Yet the health officials handling the situation are criticized. The question of political pressure remains unanswered. Food shortages and corpse disposal created major problems. The city’s officials showed great courage. Galley slaves removed corpses from the Tourette district. Religious leaders like Mgr de Belsunce offered comfort to the dying.

Michel Serre a painter who witnessed the plague left behind a visual record. His work depicts the suffering and chaos of that time. The plague is a significant historical event. It remains deeply ingrained in the collective memory of Marseillais. Recently renovated the long-unused pavilions hosted exhibitions in 2020. The “Consigne à Images” an art center opened permanently in 2023. In 2023 the second building found a new purpose. It will become a center for maritime professions. The Ancienne consigne sanitaire continues to evolve adapting to the city’s ever-changing needs. It stands as a symbol of Marseille’s resilience its rich past and its future.
