“Church in the Orchard”—doesn’t that sound idyllic? That’s the nickname Grange Park Methodist Church earned early in its history. Grange Park Methodist Church stands before us. It is more than just a place of worship. It is a testament to community, resilience, and architectural beauty.
Let’s step back to the early 20th century. The land between Winchmore Hill and Grange Park was developing. In 1921, the original Grange Park Methodist Church was built. A journalist described it as being “literally in the middle of an orchard”. Thus, the charming nickname was born.
The congregation grew. By 1938, a new, larger church was needed. This new Grange Park Methodist Church was built just before the Second World War. C.H.Brightiff designed it. It is a striking Art Deco building. Its features include brick construction and square buttresses. A square west tower rises proudly. Rectangular windows have emphatic surrounds.
Notice the cubic forms of the building. They are softened by a stone carving. This carving depicts a Tree of Life. You’ll see it over the north and south doorways.
Now, let’s step inside Grange Park Methodist Church if it is open. The interior is attractive and consistent. The nave gently slopes. The ceiling has an undulating profile. Pierced timber screens sit above the transepts. Look towards the east end. It is lower than the rest of the church. Geometric patterns of yellow glass fill all the windows.
But Grange Park Methodist Church is more than just a building. It is a place of mission. The church’s mission is simple. It strives “To Know God & to Make Him Known”. Prayer and worship are central. Discipleship and community engagement are too.
During the Second World War, Grange Park Methodist Church played a significant role. A memorial plaque honors those who lost their lives. Their names are forever remembered. The altar cross and flower vases are dedicated to their memory. The memorial includes names of civilians and service members.
The original 1921 Grange Park Methodist Church building still exists. It now serves as the Church Hall. It hosts many community activities. Grange Park Methodist Church is located on the corner of Park Drive and Old Park Ridings.
Today, Grange Park Methodist Church continues to serve its community. Sunday service is held at 11:00 am. All are welcome. The church celebrated its 80th anniversary in November 2018.
