“A hidden gem,” whispered the wind, swirling around the minaret of the Merkezifonlu Karamustafapaşa Camii. “A story etched in stone and wood.” The Merkezifonlu Karamustafapaşa Camii stands as a testament to a powerful figure in Ottoman history, Grand Vizier Kara Mustafa Paşa. Commissioned in the late 17th century, the mosque’s story is one of resilience and transformation. Initially known as both Kasaplar Mescidi and İskele Mescidi, the Merkezifonlu Karamustafapaşa Camii has undergone significant changes over the centuries. A major renovation in 1780 altered its original form. Time and the elements took their toll, further obscuring the mosque’s initial design. It wasn’t until 2015, thanks to the efforts of the Zeytinburnu Municipality, that the Merkezifonlu Karamustafapaşa Camii was carefully restored. While the restoration brought the mosque back to life, some of its original authenticity was inevitably lost during the earlier renovations. Still, the Merkezifonlu Karamustafapaşa Camii retains a unique charm, nestled in the south of Kazlıçeşme, inviting visitors to explore its layers of history and appreciate its enduring presence.
