“Have you seen it?” someone asks. “The Exhibition Bridge, spanning across Princes Street Gardens.” It’s not just a bridge. It is a testament to Edinburgh’s innovative spirit.

The Exhibition Bridge might not be as famous as the Forth Bridge. However, it holds its own unique story within Edinburgh’s rich history.

The Forth Bridge stands as a monument to Victorian engineering. It was formally opened by The Prince of Wales on 04 March 1890. In 2015, it earned its place as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The bridge uses 53,000 tonnes of steel and 6.5 million rivets. During construction, more than 4,000 men worked on it. Today, around 200 trains cross the Forth Bridge daily. They carry approximately 3 million passengers each year.

The Forth Road Bridge opened in 1964. It was the longest bridge of its type outside the USA. By the mid-1920s, people realized they needed a road crossing over the Firth of Forth. Construction began in 1958. The main cables use 30,000 miles of high-tensile steel wires. Queen Elizabeth II opened it on 04 September 1964. The bridge is just over 2.5km long with its approach viaducts. It received a Category A listed structure designation in March 2001.

The Queensferry Crossing is the world’s longest three-tower, cable-stayed bridge. By the early 2000s, the Forth Road Bridge was deteriorating. The decision was made to build a new bridge. The existing bridge became for buses, pedestrians, and cyclists only. The Queensferry Crossing opened on 04 September 2017. It spans 1.7 miles (2.7km). It is the longest three-tower, cable-stayed bridge in the world. Over 23,000 miles of cabling were used.

These bridges represent more than just transport links. They symbolize human ingenuity. The bridges connect communities. They allow exploration and tourism. They offer stunning views.

Imagine walking or cycling across the Forth Road Bridge. Appreciate the panoramic views of Edinburgh. Explore the vibrant communities of North and South Queensferry. Consider a boat trip for a different perspective. You can explore wildlife. See Inchcolm Island with its 12th-century abbey.
