Could a park clean a river? Here at Houtan Park, the answer is a resounding yes. Houtan Park isn’t just a beautiful green space. It’s a testament to innovative ecological design. This park, built on a former industrial brownfield along Shanghai’s Huangpu River, is a “living machine.” Houtan Park showcases how landscape architecture can heal and revitalize a damaged environment. Before 2009, this area was a shipyard and steel factory. The land was scarred, and the Huangpu River suffered from severe pollution. The water was graded Lower Grade V, the lowest possible ranking. Then came a vision for a “green Expo” for the 2010 World Expo. Houtan Park became a key part of this vision. The park’s designers created a 1.7-kilometer-long constructed wetland. This wetland acts as a natural water purification system. The contaminated river water is drawn into the wetland and flows through a series of cascades and terraces, mimicking China’s rice paddies. These terraces also serve as a beautiful reminder of Shanghai’s agricultural past. As the water flows through the wetland, plants and natural processes filter out pollutants. The water quality improves from Grade V to Grade III, suitable for irrigation within the Expo grounds. This innovative system saves a substantial amount of money compared to conventional water treatment. Houtan Park also remembers its industrial heritage. Old factory structures have been repurposed into viewing platforms and hanging gardens. Rusted steel panels, once part of the industrial landscape, now frame stunning views of the Shanghai skyline. The park is designed with a network of paths, connecting its different layers. Visitors can stroll along the boardwalk, explore the terraces, and discover the industrial relics. They can witness the water purification process firsthand and learn about sustainable design. Houtan Park is not just a park. It’s a story of transformation. It’s a symbol of hope for urban renewal and a testament to the power of ecological design.
