Here at the Instituto de Investigaciones Filosóficas, minds have pondered the most profound questions for decades. The Instituto de Investigaciones Filosóficas is part of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. It was founded in August 1940 as the Center for Philosophical Studies. Dr. Eduardo García Máynez founded it shortly after becoming Director.
Initially, professors like José Romano Muñóz met to discuss publishing their research. This led to the Boletín Bibliográfico del Centro de Estudios Filosóficos. It started in October 1940. The bulletin aimed to cultivate philosophical study inside and outside the Universidad de México. It organized talks courses and conferences. It also published works by its members.
In 1945 the Center became independent under Dr. García-Máynez. In 1954 it moved to the Torre I de Humanidades. In 1967 the University Council recognized it as the Instituto de Investigaciones Filosóficas. The IIFs moved to its current location in 1988. This area is dedicated to humanities research.
Many prominent academics have directed the Instituto de Investigaciones Filosóficas. Eduardo García-Máynez directed it from 1940 to 1965. Fernando Salmerón Roiz followed from 1966 to 1978. Other directors include Hugo Margáin Charles Enrique Villanueva Villanueva León Olivé Morett Olga Elizabeth Hansberg Torres Paulette Dieterlen Guillermo Hurtado and Pedro Stepanenko Gutiérrez. Currently Dr. Juan Antonio Cruz Parcero leads the IIFs.
The Instituto de Investigaciones Filosóficas cultivates thirteen research areas. These include Epistemology Aesthetics Ethics Philosophy of Science Philosophy of Mind Philosophy of Religion Philosophy of Law Philosophy of Language Philosophy in Mexico Political Philosophy History of Philosophy Logic and Metaphysics. Research varies across philosophical traditions with a focus on Anglo-American thought. The Instituto promotes pluralistic clear and systematic philosophy.
The IIFs hosts several research seminars. The History of Philosophy seminar was founded by Dr. José A. Robles and Laura Benítez Grobet. Dr. Ricardo Salles coordinates the Ancient Philosophy seminar.
Many Instituto researchers studied abroad. They attended universities like Columbia University and Oxford. This was supported by UNAM scholarships.
The academic staff contributes to research and teaching. They help develop study plans for various educational levels. They also collaborate with UNAM faculties especially the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters. The Instituto offers courses in philosophy. It jointly manages the Postgraduate Program in Philosophy and the Postgraduate Program in Philosophy of Science.
The Instituto has a training program for academic staff. Students participate in research and academic activities. These include seminars symposia and invited speakers. Students also conduct their own seminars.
The Instituto develops collaborative research projects. These involve members professors researchers and students. They come from various institutions within and outside UNAM.
The library “Eduardo García Máynez” dates back to 1940. Dr. Eduardo García Máynez proposed creating the Center for Philosophical Studies. The library holds over 34000 titles and 43000 volumes. It has the most important collection of philosophy journals in the Spanish-speaking world with 347 current titles. The library includes documents from philosophers like José Gaos and Samuel Ramos.
The Instituto de Investigaciones Filosóficas continues to be a vibrant center. It fosters philosophical inquiry and intellectual growth.
