Hidden within Munich’s vibrant Lehel district stands St. Anna Kapelle. This isn’t just any chapel. It holds the distinction of being Old Bavaria’s first Rococo church. Its story begins in 1727 as a joyous tribute to the birth of Maximilian III Joseph, heir to the Bavarian crown. Architect Johann Michael Fischer envisioned a masterpiece. He skillfully blended longitudinal and central construction. This innovative design set St. Anna Kapelle apart, breaking from the traditional architectural norms of the time. The Asam brothers, Cosmas Damian and Egid Quirin, along with Johann Baptist Straub, adorned the interior with exquisite Rococo details. Their artistry transformed the chapel into a visual feast. During World War II, St. Anna Kapelle suffered significant damage from bombings, particularly in April 1944. The church was later rebuilt. The neo-romanesque additions from the 19th century, including the spires, were removed. The reconstruction aimed to restore Fischer’s original facade. In 1968, Erwin Schleich meticulously reconstructed the facade, moving it forward to the location of the former neo-romanesque front. Today, St. Anna Kapelle stands as a testament to resilience and artistic brilliance. It continues to inspire awe and wonder in all who visit. It serves as a poignant reminder of Munich’s rich history and enduring spirit.
