In 1969, the construction of the Südtangente street had a big impact. Large amounts of gravel were extracted from what is now the Oberwald. This excavation led to the creation of the Erlachsee. Today, this lake is fenced off. It serves as a vital nature conservation area. Another smaller lake, the Oberwaldsee, also emerged from this project.
The Oberwald plays a crucial role in flood management. Because the Oberwald sits within the Kinzig-Murg-Rinne region. This area is a natural wetland prone to flooding, especially affecting districts like Rüppurr. After a significant flood in May 1970 that impacted the Bundesautobahn 5 highway, canals were constructed within the Oberwald. These canals manage excess water. The Seegraben, Hägenichgraben, and Scheidgraben feed into these canals. They act as tributaries of the Alb river.
At the Oberwald’s northern edge, discover the Wasserwerk Durlacher Wald waterworks. Robert Gerwig planned it, and it began operating in 1871. A distinctive water tower marks the spot. Today, highways and a freight station have reduced its use.
The Tierpark Oberwald is a highlight. It began as a temporary relocation of animals from the Karlsruhe Zoo. This happened during the Bundesgartenschau in 1967. The zoo needed more space. In 1965, some animals were moved to large enclosures in the Oberwald. Over time, it became a permanent feature.
Today, the Tierpark Oberwald houses over 100 animals. These animals represent 12 different species. Many are endangered. See Przewalski’s horses and European bison. The animal park extends into nearby forests. It includes wild boar enclosures in Grünwettersbach. There are also fallow deer enclosures in Hohenwettersbach.
