Built in 1921 Galileo Academy of Science and Technology stands proudly in San Francisco. It’s a testament to the city’s commitment to education. This wasn’t just any school. The Van Ness building opened in 1924. Plans were already underway to expand the school. The 1920s saw Galileo flourish. It was equipped to provide a high-quality education.
The school’s history isn’t without its bumps. In the 1970s extensive renovations were undertaken. There were even rumors of a permanent relocation to Fort Mason. This never happened thankfully. The building’s location made it very valuable. The school remained.
The transformation to Galileo Academy of Science and Technology began in 1995. Career pathways and academies were introduced. These included biotechnology health information technology hospitality and tourism and environmental science. The school’s reputation improved significantly. It received numerous awards. It is now considered one of San Francisco’s most improved schools.
A fascinating discovery occurred in 2007. Construction workers unearthed a time capsule. It had been buried by the class of 1982. Inside were a yearbook a frisbee a Rubik’s Cube and a Mighty Lion T-shirt. It was filled with water. The time capsule is now safely stored.

London Breed the current Mayor of San Francisco is an alumna. So is O J Simpson. The school’s football field was even named after him at one point. It was later renamed George White Field.
