Shimosa wasn’t always as we know it today. It was once part of a larger territory called Fusa Province. Emperor Kotoku however decided to divide this vast land in 645-654 AD. He created two distinct provinces: Kazusa and Shimosa. This division marked a significant turning point in the region’s history.
Shimosa’s borders were clearly defined. To the south lay Kazusa Province. To the west stood Musashi and Kozuke provinces. To the north it shared borders with Hitachi and Shimotsuke provinces. Its strategic location facilitated trade and cultural exchange between these neighboring regions.

The location of Shimosa’s capital city remains uncertain. However it was likely located near Kounodai Station in Ichikawa City Chiba. This area also holds the ruins of the Kokubun-ji temple.
The Meiji period brought sweeping changes. The provinces were converted into prefectures. Shimosa’s maps were redrawn in the 1870s. These changes marked the end of an era. However they also paved the way for the modern administrative divisions that exist today.
