Is it possible for a school to be a gift? Here at St Ann’s School, that’s exactly what happened. St Ann’s School has a history rooted in generosity and love. The year was 1856. Emily, the daughter of wealthy merchant Fowler Newsam, fell gravely ill. When she recovered, her grateful parents asked how they could show their thanks. Emily’s wish? A school for the underprivileged children in the area. Touched by her compassion, her father gifted her £500 on her 33rd birthday to establish the school. On November 1st, 1858, the “Hermitage School” opened its doors, named after a local hermitage. As the area was still rural then, it was fondly dubbed a “Country School.” Over time, Fowler Newsam generously funded expansions, transforming the school into separate boys’ and girls’ schools. He also financed the construction of St. Ann’s Church and a parsonage across the road, shaping the community we see today. The school saw many changes – from becoming a mixed school again to facing closures during wartime. Yet, it stood as a testament to Emily’s vision, a beacon of education built on a foundation of love and generosity.
