Whispers of resistance echo around the Tombe des fusillés Stele. This stele, a solemn marker of sacrifice, stands within the Nécropole Nationale de la Doua. The Tombe des fusillés Stele isn’t just a monument. It’s a chilling reminder of a dark chapter in Lyon’s history. The Nécropole Nationale de la Doua, inaugurated in 1954, was built on a former military training ground. This very ground bore witness to the Nazi executions of French Resistance members. Many were prisoners from Montluc prison. The Tombe des fusillés Stele marks the “Butte des fusillés” (Hill of the Executed). In September 1945, 77 bodies were unearthed here. These were the remains of Resistance fighters, Luxembourg citizens, and German soldiers. Their deaths spanned from October 1943 to June 1944. The actual execution site, a wall known as the “Mur des fusillés,” stands as a stark testament to this tragic period. Sixty bodies were returned to their families. The remaining 17, some unidentified, were laid to rest on the other side of the Butte. A plaque, added in 1995, lists the names of all 77 individuals executed at this site. The Tombe des fusillés Stele, with its inscription “Ici est la tombe de qui n’en a pas” (Here is the tomb of those who have none), serves as a powerful reminder of the cost of freedom. The Tombe des fusillés Stele represents not just the identified but also the unknown, those lost to the brutality of war. The surrounding Nécropole Nationale de la Doua holds over 6,000 graves from World War I, World War II, and later conflicts, including those from Indochina, Algeria, and Lebanon.
