Walk with me, and I will reveal the secrets of this sacred place. This is Santuario Nacional de la Gruta de Lourdes, a haven for faith and community. It all began in 1940, when a group of Dehonian priests arrived in Montevideo. They were tasked with establishing a parish called El Salvador, in a vibrant, yet underserved area of the city. The Dehonian priests, also known as the Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, were deeply devoted to social justice and the well-being of the community. They were committed to bringing spiritual support to the people of Montevideo.

In 1941, Father Pedro Bartels, the parish priest at the time, requested permission from the Archbishop of Montevideo to build a replica of the famous Grotto of Lourdes in France. His request was granted, and the first modest grotto was constructed behind the parish church. People flocked to the small grotto, seeking solace and a connection to their faith. Recognizing the profound impact of the grotto, the Dehonian priests decided to build a grander version. Their vision was to create a sacred space that would inspire spiritual renewal and act as a center for social work.

In 1947, the new Santuario Nacional de la Gruta de Lourdes was inaugurated. It was built on a scale similar to the grotto in Lourdes, France, even including rocks from Massabielle in France at its base. The official inauguration was a grand event, drawing thousands of pilgrims. The grotto was declared a ‘Privileged Altar,’ signifying its special religious significance.

Over the years, the sanctuary has witnessed a remarkable growth in the number of pilgrims who visit. The sanctuary has become a place of pilgrimage for not only Catholics but also for people seeking a moment of peace or looking for support in their communities. The sanctuary continues to serve as a pillar of faith, offering spiritual guidance, community programs and social services, all guided by the Dehonian priests’ ideals.

Remember, this is more than just a building. It’s a place where hearts find solace, faith ignites and compassion takes root.
