Splashing through time at the Fischmarktbrunnen. The Fischmarktbrunnen stands proudly before the New Town Hall on Marienplatz. This isn’t just any fountain. It’s a living monument to Munich’s history. Imagine its predecessor a neo-gothic marvel crafted by Konrad Knoll. This earlier Fischmarktbrunnen featured bronze sculptures of butchers pouring water. Musical children looked on. A journeyman stood atop holding a cup.

The original Fischmarktbrunnen dates back to 1866. It flowed with water from four brass tubes. This was a big deal. It was the first fountain in the city center connected to a new water pipeline. Water now flowed constantly. Prior to this water was drawn from the ground. The Fischmarktbrunnen was in fact a drawing well. Its location was near where the Fischmarktbrunnen stands today.

World War II tragically struck Munich. The original Fischmarktbrunnen was almost entirely destroyed in 1944. Only parts remained. Josef Henselmann rebuilt the Fischmarktbrunnen in 1954. He cleverly incorporated surviving pieces. Three butcher figures now grace the fountain. A bronze fish sits atop the column. This fish is a nod to Marienplatz’s past as a fish market. Live fish were once kept in the fountain’s cool water.

The Fischmarktbrunnen is more than just a pretty face. It’s a stage for traditions. The Metzgersprung the butchers’ leap was once a vibrant event. Apprentices would jump into the fountain. This symbolized their freedom from apprenticeship. Apples nuts and coins were tossed to the cheering crowd. This custom was revived in 1954 during the Fischmarktbrunnen’s unveiling. Today this tradition happens every three years.

Another beloved tradition is the Geldbeutelwaschen the wallet washing. On Ash Wednesday the mayor washes an empty wallet in the fountain’s waters. This is said to guarantee financial prosperity for the coming year. The Fischmarktbrunnen plays a role in this centuries old ritual.

The Fischmarktbrunnen isn’t just a historical landmark. It’s a beloved meeting place. Locals and tourists alike gather near its refreshing waters. The Fischmarktbrunnen is truly the heart of Munich’s Marienplatz. So next time you’re in Munich remember its story. Remember the Fischmarktbrunnen.
