Did you ever hear about the school that disappeared? I’m talking about Blessed Sacrament RC Primary School, right here on Boadicea Street. It existed for over a century, serving generations of families with a Roman Catholic education. Blessed Sacrament RC Primary School was more than just bricks and mortar. It was a community hub, a place where friendships blossomed and futures were shaped. Ofsted reports in 2018 painted a picture of a “Good” school, a testament to the dedicated staff and the vibrant student body. Imagine the classrooms bustling with 207 pupils, 95 boys and 112 girls, their voices echoing through the halls. Almost 30% of the students received free school meals, showcasing the school’s commitment to inclusivity. Blessed Sacrament RC Primary School wasn’t without its challenges. By 2024, the school’s capacity of 210 pupils was drastically under-filled, with only 76 students remaining. The school, clinging to its heritage, applied to become an academy. This was a last-ditch effort to avoid the looming threat of closure. The attempt failed. The Department of Education delivered the final blow, denying the application. The once lively halls of Blessed Sacrament RC Primary School fell silent on July 31, 2024. The story of Blessed Sacrament RC Primary School is bittersweet.
