Envision, if you will, a house not built of brick or stone, but of courage. This is the Otto-Hörner-Denkmal. It stands as a powerful reminder of a man who risked everything. The memorial honors Otto Hörner. He was a locksmith and kiosk owner from Karlsruhe.

Otto Hörner lived a simple life. He was born in 1884 and married Margarete Emma Krause in 1913. Around 1925, he took over a kiosk in Karlsruhe. Life took a turn with the rise of the Nazi regime. Hörner faced a moral crossroads.

The Otto-Hörner-Denkmal commemorates his brave actions during World War II. From 1942, Otto Hörner hid Jewish people in his weekend house. It was located on the northern edge of Ettlingen. He sheltered them from deportation. The Loebels family, with their children Hannelore and Ellen, found refuge there. Two boys, Paul and Jakob, also joined them. They had fled a children’s home in Berlin. Hörner’s sister-in-law helped provide for those in hiding.

Imagine the fear. Picture the hope. Feel the tension of those times. Hörner’s actions were a beacon of humanity amidst darkness. Most Germans blindly followed Hitler. Otto Hörner listened to his moral compass. He risked his own life to protect others.

The Otto-Hörner-Denkmal is a sculpture in the form of an open house. It is made of Corten steel. The artist Madeleine Dietz created this multi-part memorial. The monument stands near the cemetery wall in Ettlingen’s Vogelsang. It reminds us of Hörner’s courage and actions.

Otto Hörner died in January 1945. He passed away shortly before French troops liberated Ettlingen. In August 1945, the path to his weekend house was named after him. It became the Otto-Hörner-Weg. Yad Vashem recognized Hörner as one of the Righteous Among the Nations. He received the honor on November 27, 2002. Rudolf Zogelman was honored too.

The Otto-Hörner-Denkmal in Ettlingen serves as a lesson. It challenges us to follow our own moral compass. We must act even when it means taking risks. The memorial asks: How will future generations view our actions?

Pause here. Reflect on Otto Hörner’s legacy. He represents the power of individual courage. He shows us how one person can make a difference. The Otto-Hörner-Denkmal stands as a testament to his bravery. It is a symbol of hope and humanity.
