Hidden within the heart of Jatinegara Kaum lies Masjid Jami’ Assalafiyah. Its history is interwoven with the dramatic escape of Pangeran Jayakarta. This isn’t just any mosque. It’s a testament to resilience. A symbol of faith amidst conflict.
The year is 1619. Pangeran Jayakarta the last ruler of Jayakarta faces the might of the VOC. A fierce battle ensues in Mangga Dua. Facing defeat Pangeran Jayakarta employs a clever ruse. He throws his robe and turban into a well. The Dutch believing him dead fill the well. Meanwhile Pangeran Jayakarta and his followers flee.
They find refuge in the dense jati forests. This area is now Jatinegara. Here amongst the trees they build Masjid Jami’ Assalafiyah in 1620. It becomes more than a place of worship. It’s a rallying point. A beacon of hope for those resisting the Dutch.
The mosque’s construction was more than just bricks and mortar. It was about establishing a new community. A sanctuary for those who had lost everything. The act of building became a symbol of defiance against the VOC.
Later renovations including one by Pangeran Sugeri added to the mosque’s grandeur. Pangeran Sugeri a son of the Sultan of Banten had joined Pangeran Jayakarta’s cause. The mosque stands as a reminder of a shared struggle against oppression. It reflects both the strength of faith and the resilience of the human spirit.
The mosque isn’t just old stones and wood. It holds within its walls priceless history. It stands on hallowed ground. The grounds include the tombs of Pangeran Jayakarta his family and descendants. These tombs serve as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made to protect this place of worship.
Sadly some of the mosque’s original treasures are gone. A tasbih and a gobang are missing. Yet the four original jati wood pillars supporting the upper minaret remain. These pillars bear silent witness to centuries of prayers and struggles. They are a physical link to the past.
The minaret’s unique carvings are a fascinating detail. The intricate Arabic script resembles a honeycomb. This beautiful detail is a testament to the craftsmanship.
