“Twelve avenues, like rays of light, exploding outwards.” The old woman’s words caught my attention as I stood gazing at the Place Charles de Gaulle. Her eyes, reflecting the swirling traffic, held a lifetime of Parisian stories. Place Charles de Gaulle, or Place de l’Étoile as many still call it, is more than just a traffic circle. It’s a nexus of history, a stage for grand parades and solemn commemorations. Originally, this was a humble hunting crossroads, known as Butte Chaillot. Imagine the scene, long before the roar of engines, the quiet rustle of leaves as hunters traversed the paths. By the late 18th century, the area took on its distinctive star shape, earning it the name Place de l’Étoile, “Square of the Star”. The twelve avenues radiating outwards were part of Haussmann’s renovation of Paris during the Second French Empire. At the heart of it all stands the Arc de Triomphe, commissioned by Napoleon I to celebrate his military victories. While he never saw its completion, the Arc de Triomphe has become a symbol of French national pride, a monument to those who fought and died for France. Beneath its vault lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a constant reminder of the sacrifices of war. The Place Charles de Gaulle has witnessed history unfold. From Napoleon’s wedding procession passing under a mock-up of the unfinished arch, to the somber funeral procession of Victor Hugo, the square has seen it all. It was even the site of a daring, if unauthorized, aerial feat in 1919, when a pilot flew his plane through the arch! After Charles de Gaulle’s death in 1970, the square was renamed in his honor. Though the name has changed, the spirit of the Place de l’Étoile remains. It’s a place of grandeur, of history, and a testament to the ever-evolving story of Paris.
