Can you hear the echoes of centuries past? This is the Ev. Kirche Vollmarshausen. It stands as a testament to faith and resilience in Vollmarshausen.
The Ev. Kirche Vollmarshausen wasn’t always here. A previous church stood on this very spot. Sadly, it fell into disrepair and was torn down in the early 19th century. Imagine a building in a pre-Gothic or Byzantine style. No image remains to show us what it looked like.
But from its foundation rose the Ev. Kirche Vollmarshausen we see today. Daniel Engelhard designed this new church. Construction took place between 1838 and 1839. Its design reflects classicism. Yet, its floor plan and tower hint at a Byzantine basilica.
Inside, the Ev. Kirche Vollmarshausen could hold 310 men and 290 women. The altar, baptismal font, bells, and chalice came from the old church. A late Gothic baptismal font with tracery is now in the tower.
The Ev. Kirche Vollmarshausen has seen changes over the years. In the mid-1960s, the interior was renovated. Before, seating was arranged by social status and gender. This division was eliminated. A new organ from R. Böhm in Gotha was installed.
Long ago, the pastor of Vollmarshausen owned land in Ochshausen. It was thought that Ochshausen belonged to Vollmarshausen because the church here was older. Near the Ev. Kirche Vollmarshausen once stood a castle. Landgrave Moritz had it torn down long ago.
The Ev. Kirche Vollmarshausen has seen its community evolve. In 1954, the Wellerode congregation became independent. It was separated from the Vollmarshausen parish.
