“Small but mighty” could easily describe Hiroshima City Yuki Higashi Elementary School. Its history is a testament to community spirit and adaptation.
Standing here at Hiroshima City Yuki Higashi Elementary School, you might not guess its story. The school has seen many changes. It reflects the area’s growth and resilience.
Let’s step back in time. In 1875, three villages each established their own elementary schools. These were the villages of Wada, Mukitani, and Shimo. Over the years these schools evolved. They merged and changed names.
By 1889, the three villages joined. They formed the village of Minochi. The schools became known as Minochi Elementary Schools.
In 1941, a national decree changed the schools’ names again. They became Wada, Minochi, and Minochi Shimo National Schools. World War II impacted everything. In 1943, the Minochi National School building was relocated to this very site.
After the war in 1947, the school system was reformed. The schools became Wada, Minochi, and Minochi Shimo Elementary Schools. They were all village-run. In 1949, Wada Elementary became Minochi Kami Elementary.
A major change came in 1956. The villages of Kami-Minochi, Minochi, and Sagotani merged. This created the town of Yuki. Each school then became a Yuki town-run elementary school.
In 1968, three schools merged. These were Yuki Town-Run Minochi Kami, Minochi, and Minochi Shimo Elementary. They united under the name Yuki Town-Run Minochi Elementary School. The Kami and Shimo locations were called Kami and Shimo Campuses.
Finally in 1969, the present school building was completed. The campuses fully integrated. The school was renamed Yuki Higashi Elementary School.
In 2005, Yuki merged with Hiroshima City. The school’s name changed. It became Hiroshima City Yuki Higashi Elementary School.
In 2015, only 27 students were enrolled. The school uses combined grade classes. This allows teachers to focus on each child’s needs. It creates a close-knit learning environment.
In 2024, Hiroshima City Yuki Higashi Elementary School integrated Hiroshima City Yuki Nishi Elementary School.
