You see it, on a Parisian wall, a plaque dedicated to a man called Clovis Vincent. He was a French neurologist and neurosurgeon, one of the pioneers of brain surgery in France. Vincent’s plaque reminds us of his groundbreaking work and the impact he made on medical science.

He dedicated his life to understanding the human brain. He was a student of Professor Fulgence Raymond, the successor of the famous neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot. Vincent had a deep respect for Joseph Babinski, another pioneer in neurological research. During the First World War, he was sent to the front lines where he treated soldiers suffering from what was then known as “shell-shock.” He even tried to cure soldiers suffering from neurological disorders with a controversial treatment called “torpedoing.” This treatment involved inflicting electric shocks on patients, an early and dangerous form of electroconvulsive therapy.

Clovis Vincent was also known for his attempt to operate on the brain of Maurice Ravel, the famous French composer. Ravel had suffered a stroke, which left him unable to compose. Vincent performed surgery to remove the clot, but Ravel sadly fell into a coma and never recovered. He died in 1937 at the age of 62.

The plaque dedicated to Clovis Vincent serves as a reminder of his contributions to the field of neurosurgery. His research and discoveries helped pave the way for modern brain surgery, and he is still remembered today as a pioneer in his field. When you stand before the plaque, you can almost hear whispers of his dedication and passion for understanding the human brain. His legacy lives on in the world of neuroscience and surgery.
