Imagine the scene a catastrophic fire engulfing a church yet a sacred statue miraculously survives. That’s part of the story of Saint Cecilia Catholic Church. This church stands as a testament to faith community and resilience in the heart of Dallas.

Saint Cecilia Catholic Church has deep roots. The church was founded in 1933. The original building served its congregation from 1949. The location is 1845 W Davis St Dallas.

Tragedy struck on August 17 2007. A lightning strike ignited a fire. The church building was destroyed. Yet from the ashes a rebuilding campaign emerged.

In November 2009 Bishop Kevin Farrell led a groundbreaking ceremony. This marked the beginning of a new chapter for Saint Cecilia Catholic Church. By November 2011 the new church building was dedicated.

Amidst the devastation a miracle occurred. The original statue of Saint Cecilia remained. It was not seriously damaged by the fire. This relic became a symbol of hope and perseverance for the community.

Saint Cecilia isn’t just a church it’s also a school. The Sisters of St Mary of Namur founded Saint Cecilia Catholic School in 1935. The school is located in the Bishop Arts District minutes from downtown Dallas.

The current school building dates back to 1954. It provides dedicated spaces for various subjects. These include art music technology and science. There is also a gymnasium a performance stage a library and a grotto.

The school’s motto is “To Serve as Jesus Did”. Students are reminded daily of expected behavior. They are encouraged to follow Christ’s example of service.

The school has a diverse student body. Over 90% of the 187 enrolled students identify as Hispanic. With a 10:1 student faculty ratio each student receives individual attention. Many students are children and grandchildren of alumni making Saint Cecilia multi-generational.

Saint Cecilia partners with various organizations. These include the Perot Museum 12 Hills Nature Preserve SMU and the University of Notre Dame. These partnerships enhance academic experiences. Cultural activities are also a key part of the school year. Students participate in events like Day of the Dead Cinco de Mayo and Mardi Gras.

However Saint Cecilia Catholic Church has also faced difficult times. In 2017 Rev Edmundo Paredes was accused of stealing from the parish. Later he faced allegations of sexually assaulting minors. He fled and a warrant was issued for his arrest. The Bishop of Dallas prostrated himself on the altar of Saint Cecilia as a sign of penance.
