Did the ghosts of millers ever whisper secrets to the wind here at Molí den Carreres? Molí den Carreres stands as a stark reminder of Palma’s industrious past. Perched on the cliffs of Es Jonquet, overlooking the bustling harbor, it’s one of the few remaining windmills that once defined Palma’s skyline. These windmills weren’t just picturesque additions to the landscape. They were vital to the city’s economy, grinding grain into flour that fed the population. Molí den Carreres, along with its brethren, has witnessed centuries of Palma’s history. Documents show windmills in this area dating back to the 15th century. One was specifically mentioned in 1406. It’s fascinating how these structures were passed down through generations. Each new owner often renamed the mill, leading to a rich tapestry of names over time. Molí den Carreres is a typical example of a base mill, meaning it has a cylindrical tower, about 8 meters high and 4 meters in diameter. The thick, 90 cm walls protected the inner workings. Inside, a spiral staircase led to the machinery, where small windows offered glimpses of the harbor. These windows were vital. They allowed millers to check the wind direction and adjust the sails accordingly. This adjustment was done from inside, using levers to rotate the entire top of the mill. Molí den Carreres stands in silent testament to a bygone era. Sadly, not all the windmills of Es Jonquet survived. Some, like Molí den Toni Trossos and Molí den Moll, were lost to time and neglect. Molí den Moll was demolished in 1975, deemed unsafe by the city. But Molí den Carreres persists, a weathered sentinel overlooking the sea, whispering stories of flour dust, turning sails, and the tireless millers who once harnessed the wind’s power.
