Picture this. You’re standing before New Hope Baptist Church in Seattle. Its walls whisper tales of resilience. They echo the unwavering faith of a community. A community that has overcome immense challenges.
New Hope Baptist Church isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to enduring hope. It’s a place where history unfolds. Its story began on September 18 1949. Dr C E Williams and Deacon Ivory Luke had a vision. They wanted a church that harmonized worship. This was New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. The name itself reflects the many disappointments faced by the community. It would offer new hope to all.
Their first services were in a former grocery store. Eight people formed the initial congregation. Three were deacons. After three short months and $800 in pledges they purchased a building next door to their current location. The church flourished. On November 13 1949 twenty-five new members joined. By December 4 1949 eighty people partook in the Lord’s Supper.
The church’s growth was phenomenal. In December the congregation voted to buy the property at 120 21st Avenue. This building seated 180 people. Groundbreaking for their new church started July 27 1958. Construction began September 15 1958. The lower auditorium opened on Easter Sunday March 29 1959. The main auditorium was completed June 21 1959. The congregation had grown from eight to four hundred and ninety members. By August 1963 their membership reached six hundred.
The original budget was $80000. Increased costs raised it to $150000. They paid off the mortgage in 1970. Sadly Dr Williams passed away March 25 1985. He had a dream of an educational building. This dream would remain unrealized for many years to come.
Then tragedy struck. A devastating fire destroyed the church on May 17 1994. It was a devastating blow. Yet the spirit of New Hope Baptist Church remained unbroken. Services continued in a tent. Then in the Helene Matthews East Madison YMCA. Finally at the Emerald City Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Despite another arson attempt on October 31 1998 the church persevered. On January 31 1999 they held their first service in their rebuilt sanctuary. Their dedication service lasted from February 7 to 14 1999. It ended on Valentine’s Day a day of love and happiness.
