Jaguares once roamed these lands. Now the Partido de Tigre thrives. This bustling area of Buenos Aires Province is more than just a pretty face. It’s a living testament to Argentina’s rich history.

Originally called the District of Las Conchas the Partido de Tigre took its current name in the 19th century. The name Tigre comes from the jaguars that once inhabited the area. The Reconquista River which was once called Las Conchas snakes through the heart of Tigre. A strategic port was established at the river’s mouth. It became a hub for smuggling attracting invaders from Portugal England and Spain.

Floods repeatedly devastated early settlements. The town was moved to its present location at the mouth of the Lujan River around 1820. Imagine the chaos the hardship the resilience of those early settlers.

Domingo Faustino Sarmiento president of Argentina from 1868 to 1872 played a key role in Tigre’s development. He championed the area’s potential. He even fought for settlers’ land rights. His former island home is now a museum. The arrival of the railway in 1865 further boosted Tigre’s growth. It connected the area to Buenos Aires. Trade flourished. Daily visits from city dwellers became common. This led to the creation of recreos places for leisure on the islands.

The islands themselves offer a unique glimpse into life on the Paranà Delta. Early inhabitants included indigenous Guaraníes. Later settlers exploited the land’s resources. They built homes from simple materials like sun-dried bricks rush straw and wood.

Fruit growing dominated the economy until a devastating flood in 1940. The market shifted. Other industries including apiculture nurseries and handicrafts emerged. The Delta Products Market in Tigre showcases the region’s diverse products.

Tigre’s social life was vibrant especially among islanders. They published the Delta journal. They celebrated Islanders Day each year. They even had a floating church. Rowing became a major attraction. President Sarmiento attended the first regatta in 1873. Elegant rowing clubs and hotels catered to the Belle Epoque elite.
