Is it possible that the stones beneath our feet whisper tales from a time long before this church stood tall? We are standing before Santa María Nativitas. This isn’t just any church. It is a landmark steeped in history and tradition.

Santa María Nativitas de Zacapan. This Xochimilco village is known as the place between docks and flowers. Once upon a time, it was simply Zacapan. In Náhuatl, that meant above the straw.

Let’s step back to the early days. Construction of Santa María Nativitas began in the late 16th century. It is believed that stones from pre-Hispanic structures were used in its construction. Imagine the layers of history embedded in these walls. The church honors the Virgin Mary and the Nativity of Jesus.

By the 17th century, the sacristy served as a hospice. Franciscan friars used it during their visits. The bell tower was added in the 18th century. Around 1808, renovations took place.

The church suffered damage in the 2017 earthquake. This caused cracks in the vaults and nave. The bell tower separated from the main structure. Restoration work was completed in November 2020. The restoration cost four million pesos. Mexico City’s Chief of Government, Claudia Sheinbaum, inaugurated the restored church.

The architecture of Santa María Nativitas is beautiful. The church has a single nave. Its ceiling is made of vaulted stone. The facade features white and blue stonework. The entrance has a semicircular arch. Columns support the arch. Pinnacles top the columns. A rectangular opening sits above a cornice. In front of the church, there is an atrium. Next to the church is the bell tower. It has two sections. It is topped with a vault and a cross.

Santa María Nativitas holds deep cultural significance. Locals maintain traditions passed down through generations. Religious celebrations are especially important. The church suffered damage. The community rallied. They worked to restore their beloved Santa María Nativitas.

Every January 6th, the town celebrates one of its oldest religious traditions. The celebration surrounds the image of the crucified Christ. This image is on the main altar. Locals consider it a sister celebration to the Lord of Chalma. The devotion to the Lord of Chalma is strong in southern Mexico City.

Tradition blends with resilience here. Santa María Nativitas stands as a testament. It symbolizes faith, history, and community spirit. Take a moment to appreciate the blend of indigenous and colonial influences. Consider the generations who have sought solace within these walls.
