“Never call her Betty.” I think that’s a good place to start our story about Laine Theatre Arts. This prestigious performing arts college in Epsom, Surrey has been a world-class leader since 1974.

Laine Theatre Arts was founded by Betty Laine OBE. She was a former professional dancer. Miss Laine, as she’s known, created a unique atmosphere. People can feel it in the air.

The college prepares students for careers in musical theatre. It has a very high success rate. More than 94% of students find jobs within six months of graduating. Laine Theatre Arts has a history of feeding artists into West End theatre. They also go to dance companies, television, film, and pop music.

Laine offers four tracks of study. These programs cover vocational training in performing arts. Students can earn a Level 6 Diploma in Professional Dance. A Level 6 Diploma in Professional Musical Theatre is also available. There is a one-year Laine Theatre Arts Foundation Diploma. Students can also take a BA Honors Musical Theatre. It is a one-year top-up degree validated by the University for the Creative Arts.

The college is accredited by Trinity College London. The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority also recognizes it. The Council for Dance Education and Training accredits Laine as well. Many students receive funding from the British Government. This comes through the Dance and Drama Awards scheme.

Laine Theatre Arts is an approved center of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing. Students can gain nationally recognized dance teaching qualifications. These qualifications are available in ballet, tap, and modern theatre dance. The college stages an annual production at the Epsom Playhouse theatre. Laine also offers evening dance classes for adults.

Many successful people support Laine Theatre Arts. Sir Matthew Bourne and Derek Deane are patrons. David Grindrod and Gillian Lynne DBE are also patrons. Stephen Mear and Arlene Phillips CBE lend their support. Stephen Brooker is another patron.

Laine Theatre Arts boasts many notable alumni. Victoria Beckham trained here. Charlie Bruce and Karen Bruce also attended. Warwick Davis and Louise Dearman are alumni. Kerry Ellis and Jo Gibb honed their craft here. Sean Ghazi and Sarah Hadland are graduates. Ruthie Henshall and Lee Latchford-Evans studied here. Charlie Stemp, Summer Strallen, and Hayley Tamaddon are also alumni.

Miss Laine retired as principal in 2022. But her legacy lives on. Laine Theatre Arts fosters creative talent. The college prepares students to be musical theatre members. They can also specialize in contemporary or commercial dance.

Laine Theatre Arts is a warm and safe space. Students explore their craft and hone their skills. The college values equality, diversity, and inclusion. It is committed to creating a representative environment.
