What if icebergs were not just floating masses of ice? What if they were homes? Here at Aarhus Docklands stands Isbjerget. It means The Iceberg in Danish. This residential building is a sight to behold.

Isbjerget is more than just a building. It is an architectural marvel. It reshapes Aarhus’ skyline. The Iceberg mimics floating icebergs. Its design is both innovative and visually stunning.

Completed in 2013, Isbjerget was the first project in this area. The area was once an industrial port. Now it is a vibrant residential and commercial hub. The Port of Aarhus relocated. This opened up space for this exciting development.

Four architectural firms collaborated on Isbjerget. CEBRA and JDS Architects from Denmark contributed their skills. Louis Paillard from France added his expertise. SeARCH from the Netherlands also played a vital role. PensionDanmark, a Danish pension fund, provided the funding.

Isbjerget consists of four buildings. They house 208 apartments. Sizes range from 55 to 200 square meters. These apartments cater to various needs. Some are two stories. Others boast double-height ceilings. Some have shifted floor plans. Both rented and owned apartments are available.

The buildings vary in height. The shortest building is closest to the water. The tallest stands further back. This arrangement ensures optimal sea views for everyone. The buildings are divided into smaller units. Crisscrossing patterns and steep roofs characterize them.

The sharp triangular edges define Isbjerget. Shifting irregular facades add to its unique look. White terrazzo clads the buildings. Balconies feature blue glass. These materials enhance the iceberg aesthetic.

Isbjerget has garnered international recognition. In 2013, it won the Best Residential Development award. This was at the French architects conference MIPIM. In 2015, ArchDaily awarded it Best Housing.

The design maximizes views and sunlight. Architects had to respect the inland urban context. Instead of closed building blocks, four L-shaped wings were used. These wings open towards the water. Jagged lines cut through the building volumes. This ensures daylight reaches every apartment.

Roofs rise and fall creating peaks and valleys. This creates visual passages across the buildings. It allows residents in the back to enjoy the view. Dividing each building into tops and valleys adapts the scale. It creates more architectural appeal.

The structure presses down towards street level in some areas. This creates a harbor-oriented feel. In other areas, the structure rises. This adds urban qualities. City and harbor meet here in a common style.

The varying forms allow for different dwelling types. The outer geometry changes upwards. Flats range from townhouses to penthouses. This variety aims to create a socially diverse community. Isbjerget becomes a neighborhood. It is more than just housing blocks.

The facade’s white terrazzo contrasts with the balcony’s tropical wood. Interiors feature marble tiles and handleless kitchens. The windows had to be durable. They also needed to have good energy performance. Special drain solutions were developed for the slanting constructions.

So, as you gaze upon Isbjerget remember it is not just a building. It is a testament to innovative design. It is a vibrant community. It is an iceberg that has found its home in Aarhus.
