In the heart of Istanbul, nestled near the bustling Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty, stands the unassuming yet historically rich Kasap İlyas Cami. This mosque, though small and seemingly simple, holds a captivating story deeply intertwined with the city’s vibrant past. Kasap İlyas Cami isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to a man, a profession, and a city’s transformation. Our story begins with a man named İlyas, the head butcher, or “Kasap” in Turkish, for Mehmed II’s army. Following the conquest of Constantinople in 1453, İlyas was entrusted with a crucial task: supplying meat to the newly conquered city. The route he used, known as Kasap Yolu, or Butcher Road, now Samatya Street, became the lifeline for Istanbul’s meat supply. It stretched between Yedikule and Aksaray, running parallel to the city walls and the railway line. Around 1494, nearing the end of his life, İlyas established a small mosque-centered foundation along this very road, a place that would eventually bear his name: Kasap İlyas Cami. The mosque we see today, however, isn’t the original structure. Kasap İlyas Cami has weathered the storms of time, quite literally. The 1894 earthquake completely destroyed the original building. It was rebuilt using the remaining stones, maintaining the original foundation. Another reconstruction took place in 1977, and further renovations in 1993 reshaped the last congregation place with a wooden covering. These changes, though necessary, mean the present structure bears little resemblance to İlyas’s initial vision. The current Kasap İlyas Cami is a square building with stone facades. The interior features an added dome, and the mihrab is uniquely horseshoe-shaped. The minaret, constructed from cut stone, stands at the northwest corner, seamlessly integrated into the main structure. But the story of Kasap İlyas Cami doesn’t end with the building itself. İlyas, true to his connection with the area, was buried near the mosque he founded. What began as a simple tomb evolved into a graveyard over the centuries. Today, the graveyard at Kasap İlyas Cami stands as a poignant microcosm of Ottoman Istanbul’s transformation from a bustling metropolis to a city of the dead. The headstones and footstones, bearing motifs from various artistic periods, tell silent stories of lives lived and lost, reflecting the evolving artistic landscape of the city. Kasap İlyas Cami, therefore, is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a living testament to a butcher who fed a city, a mosque that endured, and a graveyard that whispers tales of Istanbul’s intriguing past.
