What brought settlers to this very spot, to the heart of Eureka Center? The year is 1853. Imagine the Kingsley brothers, Cyrus, Dwight, and Ancil, hacking through dense wilderness under the direction of Captain Dodd. They were building a road, a lifeline connecting Fort Snelling to St. Peter. Captain Dodd, captivated by the beauty of this location along the Vermillion River, staked a claim. He dubbed it Eureka Center, marking the heart of Eureka Township. He didn’t stay, but the Kingsleys did, joined by Benjamin Caskey. In 1854, they built the first cabin here in Eureka Center. The Dodd road, now Dakota County Road 80, still runs through Eureka Center, five miles south-southeast of Lakeville. It was a bustling thoroughfare, bringing travelers, dignitaries, and settlers to the Kingsleys’ humble cabin. In 1855, thirteen prairie schooners rolled into Eureka Center. These twenty-eight Hoosiers from Indiana, searching for fertile land, exclaimed “Eureka!” meaning, “I have found it!” Their arrival cemented the name, Eureka Center. The Minneapolis, Northfield and Southern Railway once had a station in Eureka Center, further solidifying its place in the landscape. The Eureka Town Hall, a testament to the township’s growth, also stands here in Eureka Center. It’s a place of community and governance, a far cry from the simple log cabin that began it all.
