Gazing up at this colossal structure, have you ever considered its unusual past? This, my friends, is the Auditorio Nacional. It’s more than just a concert hall. It’s a piece of living history, a stage that has witnessed everything from Olympic gymnasts to international beauty queens. The Auditorio Nacional’s story begins, surprisingly, with horses. In 1952, inspired by the Mexican equestrian team’s success at the 1948 London Olympics, President Miguel Alemán envisioned a grand venue for equestrian events. Part of the neighboring Campo Marte military land was donated, and a riveted iron structure, complete with stables and a main theater, began to rise. It opened, though unfinished, for the Lions Club World Convention in 1952. A mere six months later, the arena was abruptly closed, work suspended. It reopened in 1953 as the El Granero Theater, showcasing a circular stage. By 1955, it had become known as the Auditorio Nacional. For over three decades, this versatile venue hosted artistic performances, trade fairs, political gatherings, even international beauty pageants. The Auditorio Nacional even played a role in the 1968 Olympic Games. By the late 1980s, the Auditorio Nacional needed a major facelift. Architects Teodoro González de León and Abraham Zabludovsky took on the challenge. After 18 months of transformation, the Auditorio Nacional was reborn in 1991. The new stage quickly became a magnet for rock bands, renowned artists, and world-class orchestras. Its global prominence was cemented in 2002 with the Pollstar Award for “Best International Venue”. Today, the Auditorio Nacional embraces a diverse range of performances, from music and dance to cinema and opera. Its lobby displays remnants from past performers and houses sculptures like Vicente Rojo’s “Escenario 750” and Manuel Felguérez’s “Teorema inmóvil”. And don’t forget the OMAN, the Monumental Organ of the National Auditorium. This magnificent instrument boasts 15,633 pipes, making it the largest in Latin America. Outside, the esplanade features Juan Soriano’s sculpture “La luna” and Teodoro González de León’s “Tres figuras aureas”. The Auditorio Nacional complex also houses the Lunario, a smaller venue for intimate concerts. So, as you stand before the Auditorio Nacional, remember, you’re not just at a concert hall. You’re at a place where history, art, and culture converge.
