Think of the roar of the crowd. That electrifying energy pulses through the Youth Arena.

The Youth Arena stands here in Deodoro. It is more than just a building. It is a legacy of the 2016 Summer Olympics. This arena hosted thrilling basketball and modern pentathlon fencing events. Originally, it was planned to host wheelchair fencing events for the 2016 Summer Paralympics. However, those events were moved due to budget cuts.

Designed by Vigliecca & Associados, the Youth Arena embodies a sports hangar concept. Its elegant design fits the Olympic scale perfectly. A great span of 66.5 meters allows it to house various sports. The architects envisioned a building that could operate using natural ventilation and illumination in legacy mode. Adjustable shading devices, screens on the facade, and exhaust openings on the roof all contribute to lower maintenance costs. Artificial lighting and air conditioning were Olympic Committee requirements. They were intended for use only during the Olympic Games.

Imagine the basketball games. Stands surround the court on all sides. They create a bowl effect. This design choice intensifies the atmosphere, turning every game into a spectacle. The Youth Arena held 5,000 spectators during these basketball competitions.

Now picture the modern pentathlon fencing. The arena adapts to the sport’s unique needs. For fencing, the stands were reduced. They accommodated 4,000 seats along the sides of the court. This configuration provided the space required for simultaneous matches.

Post-Olympics, the Youth Arena transitioned into an education and training center for athletes. It now features eight sports courts. Seating is available for 2,000 spectators on one side.

Most of the Youth Arena’s structure is made of steel. Steel was chosen for its ability to create large spans quickly. The design incorporates seven triangular trusses. These trusses are 4.30 meters high. They connect to a steel-structured trussed facade.

The Youth Arena continues to contribute to ongoing athletic development in Deodoro. It serves as a testament to the power of sports. It stands as a lasting symbol of the 2016 Rio Olympics.
