Picture a granite boulder. It stands proudly at the northwest corner of Wolf and Plainfield Roads. This unassuming stone marks the last campsite of the Potawatomi Indians in Cook County. Welcome to Indian Head Park a village steeped in history. Indian Head Park isn’t just a name it’s a story. It’s a story of Native American heritage early settlement and a thriving community.

Before the village existed this land served as a final refuge for the Potawatomi. In 1835 thousands of Potawatomi Ojibwe and Ottawa ceded their lands in a heartbreaking treaty. They left Illinois in small groups. Their final camp stood near here on the Joseph Vial farm. A commemorative ceremony in 1930 marked this significant place. Alice Vial a descendant read from her grandfather’s diary sharing pioneer life. The boulder stands as a testament to this rich history.

Indian Head Park’s story continues. In the 1830s the area was known as Lyonsville. It was so central in Cook County that the first Democratic Convention was held nearby. Lyonsville Congregational Church a stop on the Underground Railroad also stands as a witness to this era. The church is the oldest Congregational Church in Cook County.

The Village of Indian Head Park itself is a relatively recent addition. Incorporated on August 4 1959 it grew from a subdivision established by Norman Higby in 1946. Early challenges included water supply electricity and refuse disposal. These challenges led residents to incorporate the area. A deep well played a crucial role in this decision. The name Indian Head Park itself is a tribute to the golf course that existed before the subdivision and the presence of Native American arrowheads.

Today Indian Head Park is a vibrant community. It boasts a park-like setting with mature trees. Deer roam freely. The community values its environmental heritage. It’s a place of excellent schools and easy access to Chicago. It’s a testament to the resilience and community spirit of its people. This charming village is indeed a well-kept secret in Chicagoland.
