“Imagine a whirlwind of change,” that’s how the story of Institut d’Educació Secundària Madina Mayurqa begins. This school has seen its fair share of transformations since its inception. Let’s step back in time to understand its journey.

The Institut d’Educació Secundària Madina Mayurqa wasn’t always here at this location. In October 1989, the newspapers announced the opening of a new institute in Palma’s Camp Redó neighborhood. Back then, it was known as Institut núm. 7. Its first home was a temporary space. Today, that space is occupied by IES Emili Darder. It stood behind the Policlínica.

A significant moment arrived in January 1990. The faculty proposed a new name to the school board. Institut núm. 7 officially became “Madina Mayurqa.” This name reflects the area’s rich history.

In its early days, the Institut d’Educació Secundària Madina Mayurqa had 360 students. Thirty-three teachers formed the initial staff. They laid the foundation for the institution we see today.

Over the years, the Institut d’Educació Secundària Madina Mayurqa underwent two major expansions. These renovations accommodated a growing student body. First, the building doubled in size with a new wing. Later, a new sports center was added.

Today, the Institut d’Educació Secundària Madina Mayurqa stands between Cas Capiscol and Camp Redó. Both neighborhoods have a higher population density than average in Palma. The school offers ESO programs and various Bachillerato options. These include Science and Technology, Humanities, Social Sciences, and General studies.

Most students come from the surrounding neighborhoods. Others arrive from more distant towns and areas. These areas have schools associated with the Institut d’Educació Secundària Madina Mayurqa in Palma’s northern zone. The associated schools include CEIP Pràctiques and CEIP Cas Capiscol. Also CEIP Felip Bauçà, CEIP Miquel Costa i Llobera, and CEIP Son Oliva. The list continues with CEIP Establiments, CEIP Secar de la Real, and CEIP Son Ferriol. Finally CEIP Maria Antònia Salvà, and CEIP Puig de na Fàtima.

The Institut d’Educació Secundària Madina Mayurqa plays a vital role in the community. It is more than just a school. It is a center of learning and growth. The address is Carrer de Miquel Arcas 4. You can reach them at 971-757278.

Interestingly in December 2022, the faculty protested against a new state education law. They gathered in front of the school. This event shows the institute’s commitment to education.

The Institut d’Educació Secundària Madina Mayurqa continues to evolve. It adapts to the changing needs of its students and the community. From its humble beginnings in a temporary space to its current expanded facilities, the Institut d’Educació Secundària Madina Mayurqa remains a cornerstone of education in Palma. It shapes the future of countless young minds.
