Ever notice how this seemingly simple mosque holds layers of history? This is the Uşşaki Camii. It stands here not just as a place of worship. The Uşşaki Camii also tells a tale of transformation and tradition.

Let’s step back in time. The year is 1879. Nâzır Mehmet Halid Efendi built this structure. It wasn’t intended as a mosque initially. Instead, it served as a dergah for the Uşşaki order. This Sufi order has its roots in the teachings of Sheikh Hasan Hüsameddin Uşşaki.

Interestingly, the Uşşaki order is a unique blend. It combines elements from the Kübrevi, Nurbahşi, and Halveti tariqas. This synthesis created a distinct Istanbul-centric tasavvuf school. The order spread throughout Rumelia and Western Anatolia.

Notice the inscription above the door. It’s a work of art by Ahmet Karahisari. He was a renowned 16th-century calligrapher. His inscription adds a layer of artistic significance to the building.

Now fast forward to the Republic era. The government closed down all tekkes. The building became a community center. This shift reflects the changing social and political landscape of Turkey.

Take a look around. You’ll notice the Uşşaki Camii’s square plan. Its walls consist of cut stone. These features reflect the architectural style of its time. Entering the courtyard a şadırvan is on the left. Under the şadırvan are the toilets. A single tomb stands across from it. Behind the tomb, a lodge is attached to the mosque at a ninety-degree angle.

During 1951 and 1952 the building underwent renovations. These changes altered its original form. It transitioned into a mosque. Today it functions solely as a cami. Only the fountain retains its original appearance.

Inside, you’ll see the interior design. There are four long windows on the left wall and two on the right. The mihrab wall lacks windows. The ceiling is flat and plastered with cement. The walls are covered with wainscoting up to the window bottoms. Patterned tiles cover the area above up to the ceiling. A women’s section and muezzin’s areas are present. The mihrab is marble. The minbar and kürsü are varnished wood.

The Uşşaki Camii has a wide-eaved roof covered with tiles. The minaret is on the back right. It features a single balcony. Its fluted body and lead-covered cone stand out. The minaret entrance is inside the mosque.

Also near the Uşşaki Camii, there’s an older fountain. The Uşşaki Tekkesi Fountain dates back to 1562. Ahmet Karahisari also created its inscription. The inscription includes a verse. It indicates the fountain’s construction date using abjad calculation.

So, the Uşşaki Camii is more than just a building. It is a testament to Istanbul’s rich religious. It also displays cultural history. The Uşşaki Camii stands as a reminder of how structures evolve over time. They adapt to meet the changing needs of a community.
