Gazetted as a national monument, St. James Power Station has a captivating story to tell. Originally, Cape St. James, where the power station stands, was a tidal swamp. It was home to the Orang Laut people, who lived in stilt houses and fished the waters. St. James Power Station, Singapore’s first power station, emerged from this humble landscape in 1927. The demand for electricity was growing. The Singapore Harbour Board needed power for the port in 1897. The Singapore Tramway Company needed it for trams and streetlights in 1902. The existing small power plants couldn’t keep up. The British colonial administration knew a larger power station was crucial for Singapore’s growth. St. James Power Station was chosen for its access to seawater for cooling. Its proximity to coal deliveries by sea and rail was also advantageous. The site offered a large five-acre area, essential for this ambitious project. St. James Power Station’s early days weren’t always smooth. The swampy ground required extensive reclamation work. A 2,000 kW generator, completed in 1926, operated only during peak hours. St. James Power Station officially opened on November 7, 1927, transforming the Telok Blangah Bay area. It generated 22,000 kW of electricity, reaching far more people than before. The power station brought new possibilities. Locals could rent electric fans and appliances from an Orchard Road showroom. However, St. James Power Station faced challenges. Shutdowns and power failures were frequent. A major power cut in 1948 lasted eight and a half hours. Another widespread blackout hit the entire island in 1950. Despite renovations and new equipment, St. James Power Station remained costly to run. The newer Pasir Panjang Power Station was far more efficient. In 1976, St. James Power Station was decommissioned. The building found new life as a warehouse for the Port of Singapore Authority. It then became a vibrant entertainment hub until 2018. Today, St. James Power Station houses Dyson’s global headquarters and a heritage gallery. The gallery commemorates the power station’s role in Singapore’s industrial history. It stands as a testament to the constant evolution of this remarkable landmark.
