“Real Happiness is” was the book that started it all. This is the story of the Chuan Hoe Seventh-day Adventist Church. It began humbly enough.
In 1972, the Southeast Asia Union College Church organized lay evangelism. The Voice of Prophecy students were the focus. Pastor Sim Chor Kiat led the VOP Club. He was mentored by Pastor Ralph Neall. They met at 988 Upper Serangoon Road. This was the house of Robert Chan. The VOP club attracted many young people. Birthie Chan and Dr Paul Genstler were also dedicated members.
In May 1972, Pastor Sim and Birthie Chan held health lectures. These “Adventures in Better Living” took place at Punggol Community Centre. It lasted four weeks. Dr. Genstler lectured. Evangelistic meetings followed at the Chan family home.
A Sabbath School started at the Chan’s house. A Branch Sabbath School was also held there. The group grew. The youth began attending divine service at SAUC. They needed more space. Ministerial students organized a church company. Soon, a full service was held. The group was called the “Punggol” group because of its location.
For 30 years, the Punggol group moved to various locations. Finally, they moved to 226 Yio Chu Kang Road in August 2002. In 1975, the West Malaysia Singapore Mission granted company status. This happened at 17 Chuan Hoe Avenue. It was then that it adopted the name “Chuan Hoe Company”. In 1988, the Chuan Hoe Company became a full-fledged church. It joined the sisterhood of churches.
