Amidst the tranquil greenery of Bremen’s Weserpark Bahrsplate, the Rosen für die Opfer stands as a poignant reminder of a dark chapter. This memorial, established in 1985, whispers stories of the KZ Bahrsplate, a subcamp of the Neuengamme concentration camp. Rosen für die Opfer translates to “Roses for the Victims”. It serves as a space for remembrance and reflection. The KZ Bahrsplate was established in 1944. It held up to 1,000 male prisoners, mostly non-Germans. These individuals were forced into labor at the Deschimag shipyard and the Bremer Woll-Kämmerei. They toiled on turbines for U-boats and other war machinery. The harsh conditions, including meager rations and brutal treatment, claimed the lives of at least 125 prisoners during the camp’s operation. The Rosen für die Opfer is more than just stones and roses. It represents the lives lost and the resilience of those who survived. In 2009, the “Stein der Hoffnung” or “Stone of Hope” was added to the memorial. This stone bears plaques with the names of deceased prisoners, a testament to their individual stories. Even today, the Rosen für die Opfer faces challenges. Acts of vandalism, like the graffiti found in 2023, highlight the ongoing struggle against forgetting. These acts underscore the importance of the memorial as a place of continued learning and remembrance.
