Have you ever felt the chill wind of the Baltic Sea on your face? Here in Pötenitz you can. We stand at the edge of the westernmost stretch of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s coastline. This small village boasts a history richer than its size suggests.

Pötenitz is a place woven into the fabric of the region. For centuries it was a humble farming village a small community tucked between the Pötenitzer Wiek inlet to the west and the Harkenbäkniederung lowlands to the east. But it played a significant role. Its location was pivotal. Centuries-long disputes between Lübeck and Mecklenburg raged over ownership of the nearby Priwall peninsula. In 1803 the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss formally confirmed Priwall as belonging solely to Lübeck. To compensate Mecklenburg-Schwerin received the Lübeck hospital villages on Poel. This settlement was not without controversy. Michael Gottfried Eckermann owner of Johannstorf and Pötenitz publicly opposed the agreement.

Pötenitz itself experienced a dramatic shift in the 20th century. The peaceful farming community became a center of military activity. During the Nazi era a massive Luftwaffenzeugamt (air force ordnance depot) was constructed near the village. This strategic location near the Luftwaffe’s testing grounds on Priwall and the rail line from Dassow made Pötenitz ideal. The depot acted as a crucial link between arms manufacturers and various branches of the Luftwaffe. Sadly the post-war period witnessed the demolition of these structures by Allied forces. The remains are still partially visible today.

The manor house of Pötenitz a symbol of the former estate reflects this complex history. It changed hands several times. It belonged to the Eckermann family from 1782 to 1902 then to the von Brocken family. After 1945 the family lost the property due to the land reform. Armgard von Brocken the last resident of the manor house fled west. The manor house served various purposes in the years after this. It once served as a community center. Even a kindergarten and shop.

The Cold War cast a long shadow over Pötenitz. Its proximity to the border created a tense atmosphere. Pötenitz became a strategic location for the East German border troops. The Pötenitzer Wiek a mere waterway formed a natural boundary separating East and West Germany. Tragically many attempted daring escapes across this treacherous waterway. Some succeeded but others perished in the icy waters.

The opening of a pedestrian crossing between Pötenitz and Priwall on February 3 1990 marked the end of an era. This act ended a long period of division. Today Pötenitz retains a quiet charm. It is a reminder of a tumultuous past and a testament to the resilience of its people. We can’t explore the ruins of the ordnance depot but we can still feel the echoes of this history. We can appreciate the peace of the Baltic. The history of Pötenitz continues to fascinate. It stands as a symbol of continuity and change.
