Can a school building hold the echoes of rock ‘n’ roll? Here at the Nicolaus-Cusanus-Gymnasium, it does. This isn’t just any school. It’s a place where history, education, and surprisingly, a bit of rock ‘n’ roll intertwine. The Nicolaus-Cusanus-Gymnasium, or NCG, opened its doors in 1951 in Bonn-Bad Godesberg’s Plittersdorf district. Named after the philosopher and cardinal Nicholas of Cusa, it was one of the first co-ed gymnasiums in North Rhine-Westphalia. Initially, classes were held at the University of Bonn and then at the Beethoven-Gymnasium before the NCG’s own building was ready in April 1952. The school’s early years weren’t just about academics. The NCG hosted some lively beat music events. A school festival in 1964 featured a performance by a band called the Rats. The following year, the Black Birds, the Desperados, and the 1880’s Group rocked the school grounds. These weren’t just small gatherings. In the spring of 1966, a full-blown beat festival took place at the Nicolaus-Cusanus-Gymnasium with five bands participating. Imagine the energy, the music, the youthful rebellion echoing through these halls. Over the years, the Nicolaus-Cusanus-Gymnasium evolved. A separate mathematics and science focused branch, later known as the Heinrich-Hertz-Gymnasium, was established in 1956. The two schools merged in 1992, becoming the Cusanus-Hertz-Gymnasium. But in 1995, the school returned to its original name, the Nicolaus-Cusanus-Gymnasium, a testament to its enduring legacy. Today, the Nicolaus-Cusanus-Gymnasium stands as a modern institution, with bilingual programs and a strong focus on science and languages. But those echoes of rock ‘n’ roll from the 60s still linger, a reminder of the vibrant history within these walls. As you stand here, can you almost hear the music?
