Founded in 1890 the Church of the Ascension stands proudly in North Minneapolis. It began as a beacon for Irish immigrants. Today its doors welcome a vibrant multicultural community. Father Alexander Christie the first pastor though his tenure was brief laid the foundation for this thriving parish. One of the largest in Minneapolis the Church of the Ascension has witnessed immense growth.

The church’s history is deeply intertwined with its school. In 1898 Father Jeremiah Harrington despite limited funds established Ascension School. He recognized the critical importance of education. Three nuns from St Joseph of Carondelet began teaching 160 students in three small rooms. The school expanded rapidly. By 1917 it boasted 734 students and 14 classrooms.

The need for a larger more modern school led to its reconstruction in 1927. Father John Dunphy spearheaded this project. The new three-story red brick building was impressive. It opened with over 1000 students. It included state-of-the-art features like a library cafeteria and a nurses office. The school continued to adapt reflecting the changing demographics of the neighborhood. From its Irish roots it transformed into a diverse community reflecting the rich tapestry of North Minneapolis. Today nearly all its students come from diverse backgrounds.

The Church of the Ascension is more than just a building. It is a sanctuary a gathering place and a testament to the enduring power of faith and community. Its mission remains unchanged: to serve as an anchor for the North Minneapolis community. It welcomes all regardless of background celebrating the diversity that makes it so unique.
