What inspired artists like Ai Weiwei, Zaha Hadid, and Orla Kiely? Let’s talk about the DNA Sculpture right here. In 2015, Cancer Research UK commissioned a unique art project to raise funds for the Francis Crick Institute in London. The project involved creating 21 sculptures, each a seven-foot-tall interpretation of the DNA double helix. These weren’t just any sculptures. They were designed by some of the biggest names in the art and design world. Each artist, including those I just mentioned, was asked to explore the question, “What’s in your DNA?”. Their answers came in the form of these captivating sculptures, each one a testament to the artists’ individual styles and interpretations of the DNA structure. The DNA Sculpture before us is one of those remarkable pieces. After being displayed across London for ten weeks as part of the DNA Art Trail, the sculptures were auctioned at Christie’s. The proceeds went to the Francis Crick Institute, a testament to the power of art to contribute to vital scientific research.
