Seven years. Seven years the community of Ramersdorf worshipped in temporary shelters. Then on December 3 1972 Cardinal Julius Döpfner consecrated the Verklärung Christi church. This wasn’t just any church. It was the culmination of a dream a testament to perseverance.
The Verklärung Christi church stands as a modern marvel. Architects Fritz Lill and Ludwig Spaenle designed it. They eschewed a traditional tower opting for a striking flat-roofed design. The exterior is simple clean lines of rendered plaster. Inside however the church transforms. Natural light streams through the side clerestories. A large window above the altar floods the space with brightness.
This wasn’t just a building project. It was a collaborative effort. The tabernacle ambo and grilles all come from Bergmeister a renowned Kunstschmiede in Ebersberg. The organ a masterpiece of C Schuster & Söhne Munich was installed in 1973. The church’s stark simplicity belies its rich history and artistic treasures.
In the 1980s under Pfarrer Theo Seidl a magnificent addition arrived. A large Romanesque crucifix dating back to around 1250 from Northern Italy became a focal point. Its presence is both a tribute to the past and a potent symbol of faith.
But the artistry doesn’t stop there. Between 1981 and 1982 Brother Benedikt Schmitz created a stunning mosaic Way of the Cross. The Franz Mayer’sche Hofkunstanstalt Munich workshop executed the work. Dedicated on February 25 1983 this mosaic is a masterpiece of religious art. One scene depicts the Transfiguration. Mount Tabor the traditional location is clearly shown. A dazzling light signifies the glory of Easter. But the footprints at the image’s center tell a different story. The journey is far from over. The path to suffering lies ahead.
Another artistic element is the outdoor bronze crucifix. Michael Veit a Munich artist crafted it. It’s a Greek cross signifying the church’s ties to Orthodox churches which hold the patron saint in high regard. Three bronze figures accompany the cross Jesus and his three disciples on the Mount of Transfiguration.
The Verklärung Christi church is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to faith community and artistic collaboration. It is a place where history and modernity intertwine creating a truly unique spiritual experience. It is a space for worship reflection and a place where the light of faith continues to shine.
