High above the shimmering Mediterranean stands Castell de Bendinat a majestic sentinel guarding the coast. Its imposing presence hints at centuries of stories waiting to be unveiled.

Castell de Bendinat wasn’t always the breathtaking sight it is today. In 1229 following a fierce battle against the Moors King James I of Aragon camped nearby. Legend says exhausted and hungry he stumbled upon a feast prepared for one of his lieutenants. So pleased was he that he declared the location Ben dinat Catalan for “well dined”. This is just one of two theories surrounding the name’s origin. The other points to a 13th-century Islamic farmhouse named Bendinex in the same area.

Construction of the castle as we see it today began after 1855 under Pedro Caro the 3rd Marquis of la Romana. Completed in 1867 the castle showcases 19th-century Central European Gothic architecture. Its 2800-acre estate boasted significant agricultural value for centuries. It passed through many hands including the Burguès family from the early sixteenth century. The Caro family owned it for a period until 1876 when it was sold to Joana-Adelaida Dameto. Later the Count of Montenegro owned this impressive structure.

Today Castell de Bendinat remains a private estate unavailable for tours. Its walls however silently whisper tales of kings feasts battles and changing ownership. From a distance you can admire its architectural splendor. Its turrets piercing the sky as a symbol of Mallorca’s rich and complex history. The castle’s beauty is enhanced by its location. It sits majestically overlooking the coast adding to its mystique.

The castle stands as a testament to the enduring power of history and the enduring allure of Mallorca’s captivating past. While the doors remain closed to the public your imagination can open them. You can step inside and allow yourself to be transported to a time when kings dined and battles raged beneath its ancient walls. The view alone from outside the walls is worth the journey to this stunning piece of Majorcan heritage.
