Can you smell the faint scent of gunpowder? It hangs in the air around the Pulvermagazin, a silent testament to Bremen’s explosive history. The Pulvermagazin, built in 1879, stands before you. It might seem unassuming now, but it once held the key to Bremen’s safety and defense. This sturdy structure replaced a series of ill-fated predecessors. Earlier powder storage locations, often situated in city towers, met dramatic ends through explosions. The Ostertorzwinger in 1624, the Stephanitorzwinger (nicknamed “Bräutigam”) in 1647, and the Herrlichkeitzwinger (“Braut”) in 1739 all fell victim to accidental detonations. After these disasters, gunpowder was stored in the city fortifications, then on an island near the Doventor, and later on Pulverberg (formerly Galgenberg) in Walle. But as the city grew, these locations became too close for comfort. The Pulvermagazin was the solution. Architect Johannes Rippe designed the Pulvermagazin on a then sparsely populated and flood-safe sand dune called Struckenberg. Its location along the Grambker Chaussee (now Oslebshauser Heerstraße) ensured it was safely distanced from the growing city. The Pulvermagazin wasn’t just for military supplies. It also housed privately owned gunpowder, which was subject to mandatory storage fees. This generated revenue for the city while ensuring public safety. Take a moment to admire the building’s historicist design. The round-arched gateway with the Bremen coat of arms reflects a blend of historical styles. Beside the Pulvermagazin stands the equally historic Wärterwohnhaus, or watchman’s house. Also designed by Rippe, this neo-Gothic brick building provided accommodation for the watchman who guarded the precious and volatile contents of the magazine. This building later served as the caretaker’s apartment for the Schule Auf den Heuen, further connecting it to the community. The Pulvermagazin served Bremen for many years. It silently protected the city and its citizens, holding within its walls the potential for both destruction and defense. It stands as a reminder of Bremen’s history, ingenuity, and commitment to safety.
