Hz. Kab Mescidi marks the burial place of Hazreti Kab. He rests eternally beside this mosque. The graves of Hazrat Abu Seyb el-Hudri, Hazrat Humeyd bin Bekir and Hazrat Ahmed el-Ensari are on the opposite side.
Let’s delve into the life of Hazreti Kab. Local Istanbul lore suggests he was a companion of Prophet Muhammad.
Imagine the scene. The 7th and 8th centuries saw Muslim armies arriving at the gates of Constantinople. This marked the First Siege of Constantinople. It lasted from 674 to 678. The siege occurred during the reign of Muawiyah I.
Many sahaba which means companions of the Prophet traveled here. During those four years, many sahaba breathed their last outside the city walls.
Centuries passed. The final resting places of these revered figures were forgotten. Some fell into disrepair. After the Ottomans conquered Constantinople in 1453, they cared for these graves.
Very little is known about the lives of those buried here. This is because some are barely known by name. Professor Dr A. Suheyl Unver penned a booklet called Istanbulda Sahaba Kabirleri. It translates to The Graves of the Sahaba in Istanbul.
The graves of Sahaba are spread all over Istanbul. A majority are situated near Eyub Sultan and Avansarayi.
