In 1887, a grand home rose on Portland Road. It was named Wharema. Let’s step back in time and explore its fascinating story. Wharema stands as a testament to Auckland’s rich artistic heritage. It was originally built for Edward William Payton, the first principal of the renowned Elam School of Arts.

Wharema’s story begins with its construction around 1886. The land was part of James Williamson’s estate. Kate Clark, a wealthy art patron, purchased the half-acre lot in June 1885. The property was then transferred to her sister, Emily Woolnough, in December 1885. Emily married Edward Payton in August 1886. The house was likely built around this time. A sketch by Payton titled “View from The Whare, Portland Road, Remuera,” dated April 1887, confirms the house’s existence. The Payton family initially called it “The Whare,” but a nameplate reveals its other name: Wharema.

Built by George Heron, a prominent builder in late 19th-century Remuera, Wharema boasted impressive double-storey balconies. These balconies offered stunning views of the Waitemata Harbour and Mount Hobson-Remuera. The house featured a parlour, dining room, and service quarters downstairs. Upstairs, there was a dressing room and four bedrooms. A circular driveway graced the grounds, shielded from Portland Road by a line of trees. A separate service yard was enclosed by a corrugated iron fence. Wharema’s construction was top-notch, featuring scoria concrete footings, a kauri timber superstructure, and a slate roof. Reeded timber lined the interiors.

Over the following century, Wharema changed hands several times. One notable owner was the Widow Tole and her sons, prominent artists and architects themselves, maintaining the house’s artistic connection. At one point, Wharema was divided into four flats. Thankfully, the original design remained largely intact. The original slate roof lasted an astounding 133 years. It has since been replaced with similar materials. This careful restoration, in line with Auckland Council and Heritage New Zealand guidelines, preserves Wharema’s historical appearance. Wharema stands proudly today as a Category 2 heritage-listed building. Its story is a testament to the enduring legacy of Auckland’s artistic past. The house stands as a tangible link to the city’s vibrant history. It continues to inspire awe and admiration.
