Did the name “True Way” ring a bell in 1939 Singapore? It did for Hokkien-speaking migrant workers. True Way Presbyterian Church, initially the Chinese Christian True-Way Church, was their spiritual haven, founded by Reverend Tan Leng Tian. Located then at Tras Street, the church served a community yearning for connection and faith. Fast forward to 1961, True Way Presbyterian Church found its new home on Stirling Road in Queenstown. The church consisted of a sanctuary for 150 worshippers, a pastor’s residence, classrooms, and administrative offices. Initially, services catered to the Hokkien and Mandarin-speaking community, reflecting the church’s roots. However, True Way Presbyterian Church recognized a shift. In 1970, an English-speaking youth fellowship emerged, indicating a growing need for English services. This marked a new chapter in the church’s history. True Way Presbyterian Church wasn’t just a place of worship. It became a vital community hub, offering counselling and educational support. This commitment to serving its neighbourhood solidified its importance beyond religious services. The church expanded physically too. Major renovations in 1989 and 1997 accommodated its burgeoning congregation. From its humble beginnings at Tras Street to its current multi-storey structure on Stirling Road, True Way Presbyterian Church has continuously evolved. Yet, its core mission has remained. It continues to be a beacon of faith and a testament to the enduring power of community.
