In 1907 parishioners faced a predicament. The church of Saint-Michel des Batignolles had become too small for its burgeoning congregation. The Epinettes district, a so-called “mission field,” needed its own spiritual center. Thus began the journey of Chapelle Saint-Joseph des Épinettes. The parish priest of Saint Michel requested a new church. The foundation stone was laid on March 19 1909, Saint Joseph’s Day. This marked the birth of Chapelle Saint-Joseph des Épinettes. The chapel stands as a testament to architectural ingenuity and community spirit. Imagine this: a trapezoidal plot of land. An old horse-drawn carriage depot. This was the challenge faced by architect Placide Thomas, a resident of the picturesque Cité des Fleurs. To overcome these constraints, Thomas turned to an innovative solution “reinforced concrete.” This allowed him to create a spacious interior. The Chapelle Saint-Joseph des Épinettes, completed in 1910, is more than just a place of worship. Its brick walls, a symbol of simplicity and durability, were a testament to the industrial character of the neighborhood. Its construction, funded largely by donations from local industrialists, embodies the community spirit. The Chapelle Saint-Joseph des Épinettes is a symbol of resilience and faith. Built after the 1905 law separating Church and State, it represents the enduring spirit of the community. Step inside and let the serene ambiance and the story of its origins wash over you. As you leave, carry with you a piece of Parisian history, a tale of resilience, and the enduring power of faith and community.
